Over the course of the past four years the Independence School District has been working on revising our curriculum. We
have now completed new math, science, social studies, language arts and health and physical education curriculums. This
year committees made up of k-12 teachers will be working on developing curriculum for the fine arts courses. The table
below will show you what we will be doing in our classroom this year. I have tried to break it down by trimester to
give you a better picture of how our learning will progess this year.

Unit 1: Place Value:
Students will
compare and order numbers to the hundred millions place.
|
Unit 2: Multiplication: (continued)

Unit 3: Division:
Students will apply the operation of division to solve problems.
|
Unit 8: Data Collection and Graphing
Students will gather, organize and evaluate data using pictographs, bar and line graphs.
|
Unit 4: Fractions
Students will use appropriate vocabulary to name & compare fractions with like
denominators.
|
Unit 6: Geometry
Students will use vocabulary appropriately to define & categorize shapes, and identify
two & three dimensional figures.
|
Unit 2: Multiplication:
Students will apply the operation of multiplication to solve problems.
|
Unit 5: Decimals
Students will read, write & evaluate decimals to the hundredths place, and solve
problems using addition & subration of decimals to the hundredths place.
|
Unit 7: Measurement
Students will use appropriate tools to estimate, measure and convert length, weight,
capacity and time using U.S. standard measures and will find the perimeter of polygons.

|
Each trimester students will be utilizing
the Accelerated Math program, daily mini-math and problem solving.
Continued practice will be done with the
basic multiplication and divison facts.

Throughout the year, students will be using the Accelerated
Reading program as part of their independent reading. Students will set reading goals each term. As part of our
genre study student will also be completing monthly book projects.

Students will be using the Sitton Spelling program
this year. This program utilizes high frequency words that children use in their everyday writing. Each unit will
be comprised of skill lessons along with writing/grammar lessons. A major part of our writing will be geared toward our Tales of a Fourth Grade Me binders.
This binder is a memory book of sorts and will showcase many different writing projects as well as other special memories
of this year.
